Deer Management in Virginia
Jim Bowman, Wildlife Biologist for the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries will review the history and management of whitetail deer in Virginia. The presentation will include information about the history and current trends in deer management…from restoring populations in the first half of the 20th Century…to challenges of managing overabundant deer herds in the 21st Century.
How to Score and Age a Buck
Cale Godfrey, Wildlife Biologist for the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries will provide hunters with the information needed to age whitetail deer after it has been harvested. If you ever wondered how to age that buck or doe you harvested, this presentation will give you the skills you need to age a deer. Todd Jones, a taxidermist, will also show attendees how to measure their trophy antlers so you can determine just how well your big buck will score with either the “Boone & Crocket” or “Virginia” antler scoring system. In addition; for those who are practicing trophy buck management, you will receive tips on how to judge a buck’s antler size you have captured on camera or before taking the shot.
The Life and Times of White-tailed Deer
Matt Knox
, Virginia Deer Project Coordinator for the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, will present various aspects of the whitetail deer's world. This talk will focus primarily on whitetail research studies that shed light on topics such as a reproduction, home ranges, daily activity periods, rutting activities, antler development, vision, hearing, food requirements, and social behavior. Knowing more about the game you pursue can increase the odds of scoring but will also expand your appreciation of this incredible animal.
Habitat Management for Whitetail Deer
Dan Lovelace
, Wildlife Biologist for the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries will discuss habitat management practices that will attract and hold whitetail deer on your hunting lands. Techniques for managing forests and open lands to meet the whitetail’s year-around needs will be presented. The talk will also feature information on how to establish high quality food plots and how habitat management will benefit other game species as well.
Spring Turkey Hunting
Tom Stuckey Pro Staff Member at Hunter's Specialties and Game Call designer for H.S. Strut will discuss the keys to a successful Spring Turkey Hunt. He has harvested turkey's in 21 different states and has achieved the Grand Slam. He has won or placed in 76 turkey calling contests, and also won the Grand National Championship.... Planning an Out-of-state Hunting Trip
Vic DiCenzo
and Mike Minnic have tagged numerous “Pope & Young” big game animals in various states and provinces without guides or other high price outfitter fees. Vic has combined their experiences and knowledge in this seminar to assist hunters on how to successfully hunt areas outside of Virginia. This seminar will highlight details to consider when planning an out-of-state hunting trip, especially when planning a “do it yourself trip”. In addition, hunters will gain valuable information needed to successfully plan a hunting trip (without a guide) to areas of the country and species that are unfamiliar. If you are considering an out-of-state hunting trip, the seminar will outline the essential steps needed to prepare and plan for a hunting trip with topics such as contact resources, pertinent gear, how to get game tags, cost saving ideas, and more.
Advanced Bass Fishing
David Dudley
is a 4-time winner of the FLW Tour and 2-time winner of the Bassmaster Tour and is currently ranked 6th in the world of professional bass fisherman. David will help bass anglers improve their catch by considering important aspects of fishing beyond the tackle box and will highlight the importance of mental preparation, building your confidence, and understanding how putting the pieces of the fishing puzzle together to provide a clearer “big picture”. Striped Bass Fishing – Spring Techniques and Tackle
Mike Snead, owner of the “Virginia Outdoorsman” sporting goods store and FishSML Striper Guide Service, will provide participants with the information needed to pursue reservoir striped bass in the spring. This workshop will include information about spring striper patterns and the different techniques and tackle used to successfully pursue stripers in the spring. Mike will provide specific recommendations on the types of tackle and equipment needed for each technique and will have gear available for participants to see and handle. He will also provide presentation information and tips for each technique that will help anglers improve their success rate. This workshop will provide all the information needed to get the novice angler started and will offer the more experienced angler exposure to several new products and a number of useful tips.
Pond Management 101 – Making the Most of Your Farm Pond
Steve Owens
is a District Fisheries Biologist for the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries who works out of the Fredericksburg Regional Office. Steve has been with VDGIF for six years and the management of small impoundments is one of his specialties. Key topics will include: proper pond layout and design, fish stocking, management strategies, and common problems encountered by pond owners.
Videoing and Photographing Your Hunt or Outdoor Adventure
Mark Hailey
has filmed various TV shows on the Outdoor Channel including Hunters Specialty’s Outdoors, Outdoor Moments, Rusty Faulk Outdoors, Sportsman’s Outdoors Strategies, and others. Mark has been filming in the outdoors for over 12 years and is co host of Four Seasons Outdoor Journal TV show (www.4seasonstv.com) which airs locally. Mark will highlight how to film and photograph your hunting, fishing, or other outdoor adventure so those special memories will last a lifetime.
Gear, Hunting Strategies & Technology
Speaker Bob Peck, is the archery columnist for Whitetail Times Magazine and hunting field editor for Great Canadian Sportsman magazine.  Bob has been invited to be a seminar presenter at 6 consecutive Archery Trade Association shows and is an accomplished hunter and bowhunter with over 35 years of experience teaching and writing about hunting issues.  Bob is also responsible for helping to implement venison donation programs in three states. Bob will discuss a wide variety of useful technologies that relate to today’s hunting and bowhunting experience. This comprehensive seminar will cover innovations in hunting apparel, GPS units, sophisticated scouting and navigational techniques. range finders and technology built into today’s archery equipment. The emphasis of the entire seminar will be tailored to using technologies and common sense strategies to create a more fulfilling hunt.
