Paulıs counsel in todayıs passage makes it clear that one
of the greatest priorities of a Christian citizen may be one of the most neglected
of all.
Praying for our leaders is the fundamental duty of the believer. Out of
that act of prayer flows all of the other duties we will be called to undertake.
It is also worth noting that Godıs Word is not only calling on us to pray for
good leaders, but for all those in authority over us.
It is an oft-quoted saying in todayıs Christian community that ³if God doesnıt pour out His wrath soon on our country, he is going to have to apologize to Sodom and Gomorrah.² While our culture certainly seems to mirror that of this ancient community, there is one very telling contrast between the two. God promised to spare them if there were even ten righteous souls in Sodom and Gomorrah, but ten could not be found. That is the refreshing hope of our nation God does not require that every citizen be a sold out believer in order to bless our nation. He does, however, look for a sold-out remnant of solid believers those who urgently and consistently seek after Him and call upon His mercy on behalf of their people.
Because of these foundations in Christ, we are perhaps among the last of the free nations in the world today. Liberty and freedom are precious to us all. God has always given us great leaders in times of grave danger when it appeared that we might lose these freedoms. Will you be a part of Americaıs called-out remnant those who commit to follow Christ no matter the cost? Will you call on God on behalf of your authorities and government leaders, even if they are not wise enough to call out for wisdom on their own?
Choose today to make your first act of citizenship a priority, and pray for your leaders.
