Week One, Day Two

Diluted Words
James 3:1-12

Two years ago, I planted a garden with my kids thinking it would be a great way to illustrate the principles of sowing and reaping.  After we tilled a small patch of ground in the back yard, however, things started going awry.  Our first mistake was letting the kids plant any and every type of seed they wanted to see grow.  After three weeks, it was very exciting to see all of the sprouts rising up from the earth.  But after three months, we had a full-blown jungle; And when the time came to harvest, every piece of fruit had either been choked to death or eaten by rabbits.

Needless to say, my reaping lesson was laid to waste.  In itıs place I learned another one if you try to plant everything, the things that really matter will be crowded out by the things that are less important.  And so it goes with our words.

How can you expect people to take your blessings seriously when they are crowded out with the curses you also speak?  Even the ³benign² words those that arenıt good or bad, but noise nonetheless can drown out the perception of those important words we have to say.

If words are as powerful as the Bible claims, it seems that we should choose them more carefully.  Choose today to limit words without meaning, to eliminate the words that donıt honor God, and let the blessings grow!

Application:

·      How many of your words make a difference for the Lord?  How many of your words are just noise?

·      Do you plant your words carefully, or do you scatter them everywhere?

·      Ask God to control what comes out of your mouth today.

³May the words of my mouth and the meditations of my heart be pleasing in Your sight²  (Psalm 19:14).
